SPS seminar - The Detection of Gravitational Waves: A New Window On The Universe

On February 11 the leaders of an international team comprised of more than 1000 scientists announced the first direct observation of gravitational radiation. The detection was made with the two instruments that comprise LIGO — the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. The existence of these waves was predicted by Albert Einstein almost exactly 100 years ago, and their detection opens up a new way to view the Universe

The best offense, is a good defense! In participation of Sexual Non-Violence Week, come and learn safe and effective ways to prevent sexual violence. Krav Maga Self-Defense is based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bear hugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. Just as important, we teach people to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter. Tested on the battlefield and in the streets, Krav Maga’s practical approach to self-defense will make you safer and more secure.

Get in shape “boot camp” style! Experience high-intensity, full-body workouts that target the major muscle groups of the upper & lower body, specifically designed to “make it rain” sweat! From circuit-style routines that jump-start cardio fitness, to creative muscle-toning exercises using dumbbells, exercise bands, or even the participant’s body weight, each class brings its own unique challenges. No two classes are the same! Students will work the quarter to improve cardiovascular stamina, core strength, & flexibility.

Cathal Breslin is a concert pianist originally from Derry, Northern Ireland, now living in Memphis, Tennessee in the United States. Has performed extensively in recitals, as a concerto soloist and a chamber musician in concert halls throughout Europe, the U.S., and Asia. He is currently Assistant Professor of Piano and Director of Piano Studies at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, Tennessee, United States. In 2008 he founded the Walled City Music Festival with his wife, American flautist Sabrina Hu. It has featured artists such as the Kronos Quartet, Sir James Galway, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Augustin Dumay, Anne Akiko Meyers, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Jan Vogler, Raphael Wallfisch, Jeffrey Zeigler, Jonathan Lemalu, Brodsky Quartet, Fitzwilliam Quartet, Houston Winds, Svetozar Ivanov, Kirill Troussov, Ye-Eun Choi among many others.
