The International Student Scholarship Fundraiser Soiree reaches out to the entire campus community. We select a theme and invite performers that spotlight a particular geographic region or a specific area of interest. The event is open to the entire Loyola community.
This year, we will highlight Mexico, a close neighbor of the U.S., and its culture, in particular through a celebration of its cuisine. For this purpose, Sodexo will create a selection of Mexican dishes and a signature cocktail. The specific menu is always one of the main attractions of the Fundraiser Soiree and at the same time an important means to share in the culture of this foreign region together. The food items will be presented as a variety of small hors d’oeuvres on a buffet, so that the participants can sample many different Mexican recipes.
The Michael Salgado Jazz Trio will perform Afro-Cuban and Latin American jazz during the entirety of the event; band leader Michael Salgado is one of our Loyola students with Mexican heritage. All current Loyola students from Mexico will be invited to the event and introduced to the guests.
In addition, we will include works from the Ninth Loyola International Photo Contest and all of the winning photos with international motifs will be on display as a gallery exhibit. We also have a silent auction that showcases beautiful items from all over the world. Ethnic food will be available to all ticket holders and all ticket and silent auction sales benefit the International Scholarship Fund.
The recipient of the 2018/2019 International Student Scholarship will be announced at the Soiree. The International Student Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 to help international students who perform well at Loyola and make contributions to cultural understanding and diversity at Loyola, but who need additional financial assistance to continue their studies here.
Special thanks to the Student Government Association and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for their sponsorship.

New Orleans is recalibrating its water management strategies. Stimulated by a thoughtful reevaluation by architect David Waggonner of the roles water may play in local resilience, emphasis is shifting from removing water from the city to retaining water and adjusting to its heretofore unseen benefits. Discussion will enumerate new pathways to better living with water as a friend and not an enemy.
Robert Thomas is Professor of Mass Communication at Loyola and holds the Distinguished Scholar Chair in Environmental Communications. He was Founding Director of the Louisiana Nature Center. He is recipient of numerous awards for his work in conservation and environmental education.
