Cosponsored by the Trial Advocacy Executive Board, this course teaches students to conduct effective direct and cross examinations for trial and other adversarial hearings. Learn the proper form of the question as well as techniques for developing and structuring lines of questioning. In cross examination, students will focus on how to craft concise leading questions that control a witness and support one's theory of the case while avoiding common pitfalls that can lead to damaging testimony. In direct examination, students will learn how to prepare their own witnesses and guide them through a persuasive recounting of events supporting one's case theory while overcoming or avoiding objections. Students will also learn scripts for commonly used techniques such as refreshing witness recollection and impeaching a witness with a prior inconsistent statement. Students who are interested in participating in the Trial Advocacy Argue On competition are encouraged to enroll.
