‘The Talk’ was created out of an important board meeting with Orleans Parish School Board and the parents of those schools. This discussion started out as a set of questions as to why the children and young adults of New Orleans are failing. The answers ranged from teachers not caring to the plague of gun violence in New Orleans.

One of the major factors of failing children in New Orleans that stood out was the gun violence. It was here that I wanted to create my own discussion of how we, the parents, teachers, neighbors, etc, can strive to better the lives of our children. What can we do to minimize, and soon stop, the endless numbers of senseless gun violence in New Orleans.

‘The Talk’ was soon created from these answers. Instead of trying to go to each child’s home and explain to each parent the importance of gun violence, I wanted to create a panel that gave personal examples as to why gun safety is important. I wanted to present a panel that had everyone on each side of the gun.

This open panel discussion would be in an insight for everyone, old and young, to hear each person’s stories and a connection to understand the importance of gun safety within New Orleans.
