Environmental Roundtables are facilitated discussions of important environmental issues, hosted by the Loyola University Environment Program. Facilitators include Environment Program students, faculty and guest hosts.
SWAMP WARS: THE FIGHT FOR THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN
Dean Wilson, founder and executive director of Atchafalaya Basinkeeper (ABK), will discuss this local NGO’s mission to protect and restore the swamps, lakes, rivers, streams and bayous of the Atchafalaya Basin for future generations, and its partnerships with regional to international NGOs such as the Waterkeeper Alliance. Mr. Wilson will also discuss some of ABK’s legal work, including past successes such as saving over half a million acres of cypress-tupelo swamps from deforestation and present projects including their efforts against the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Dr. Silva Brown will discuss the psychosocial impact of the 2011 Joplin tornado and how current research is assessing the ways in which nature can be utilized to help communities recover from tragedy. She’ll also highlight the importance of research and getting involved with projects during your undergraduate career.
