German composer Kurt Weill, himself an immigrant, fused European musical traditions with American jazz and blues in his opera about the ethnic melting pot in a 1940's New York City tenement. Crowded and impoverished conditions breed ambition, greed, much humor, passion, and ultimately a tragic crime. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Elmer Rice, with lyrics by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, Street Scene ranks with Porgy and Bess and West Side Story as a true American classic. Stage director Cara Consilvio and music director Carol Rausch bring to life this not-to-be-missed Loyola premiere.
