The World Affairs Council of New Orleans Presents Loyola Law Alumnus Professor Bruce Duthu

The World Affairs Council of New Orleans presents guest speaker and Loyola Law Alumnus Professor Bruce Duthu. The title of the talk is “John Marshall and Pope Alexander VI Walk Into a Bar: The Discovery Doctrine in the Age of Tribal Self Determination.” Prof. Duthu will be discussing how the Doctrine of Discovery has influenced the development of international law.'

Professor Duthu is the Samsom Occom Professor and Chair of Native American Studies at Dartmouth College. He earned his BA in Religion and Native American Studies from Dartmouth and his JD from Loyola Loyola New Orleans College of Law. He has served as visiting professor of law at Harvard Law School, the Universities of Wollongong and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, and the University of Trento in Italy. Professor Duthu is the author of American Indians and the Law (2008) and was a contributing author of Felix S. Cohen’s Handbook of Federal Indian Law (2005). He co-edited a special volume of South Atlantic Quarterly, “Sovereignty, Indignity and the Law,” which won the 2011 Council of Editors of Learned Journals award for Best Special Issue.
