Dr. Bryan Powell to Teach Contemporary Music Teaching Pedagogy

The Music Education Lecture Series is pleased to bring Dr. Bryan Powell, Director of Programs for Amp Up NYC and Little Kids Rock to campus to teach a day-long workshop on Contemporary Music Teaching Pedagogy.  Dr. Powell is adjunct professor of music education at Hunter College, Bergen College, and online Masters and Doctoral Music Education programs for Boston University.  Powell is a musician and music educator with elementary, secondary,

and college teaching experience who has expanded music education programming for thousands of school students in New York City and across the United States.  Bryan is a leader of the Association for Popular Music Education, an organization dedicated to promoting and advancing popular music at all levels of education.

Colleges and universities that train music teachers are now offering their students methods courses that focus in part or entirely on Contemporary Music Teaching Pedagogy.  These Contemporary Methods teach kids to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, R & B and other modern styles. Modern Band classes feature guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, technology, and computers.

This year’s Music Education Lecture Series with Dr. Bryan Powell is on November 4th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This Experiential Workshop will be presented to Loyola Music and Music Education students and is also Free to Instrumental and Vocal Music Teachers, Elementary and Secondary levels, for Continuing Learning Units (CLUs) throughout the region.  Participants may register at http://www.littlekidsrock.org/loyola-university-modern-band-workshop/.
