Martha Fitzgerald, a 1973 Loyola University New Orleans history alumna, will talk about her new book, “The Courtship of Two Doctors.” The book draws from nearly 800 courtship letters to tell the love story of her parents during the 1930s medical era before antibiotics, when health workers were at risk of serious infection and social barriers challenged two-career marriages.
Fitzgerald is an award-winning editor, author and independent publisher, and has served the Shreveport Times as columnist and editorial board member for 10 years. Other roles included associate editorial page editor, assistant managing editor, business editor and features editor. The Louisiana native co-founded Little Dove Press in 2004 and Martha Fitzgerald Consulting in 2005.
A past president of River Cities Network and Louisiana Press Women, Fitzgerald serves on the boards of Catholic Charities-Diocese of Shreveport and LSU Health Foundation-Shreveport. She earned a B.A. in history and American studies from Loyola and a master’s in history from Louisiana Tech University. She’s a lector and minister of care at St. John Berchmans Cathedral.
The event is co-sponsored by the English and history departments.
