Blood Drive for Hurricane Harvey

Date: Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Time: 11:57 am to 4:30 pm

Contact: Dale O'Neill ·

Location: St. Charles Room, Danna Student Center

For the last 15 years, the Blood Center of New Orleans has conducted blood drives at Loyola and today will host a previously scheduled blood drive on campus. Given the week’s events in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana, this drive has taken on new urgency.

While the need for blood donors is constant, the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey has both depleted local medical and emergency resources around Houston and dramatically increased the urgency of blood donation. All blood collected at today’s drive will be sent to aid the hurricane response effort.

The Blood Center, which typically services Southeast Louisiana and Mississippi, began shipping blood to affected areas Saturday and will continue to provide blood and blood components to South Texas. Houston is the fourth largest populace in the U.S. and efforts are being coordinated with donor centers around the country.

Students who participate are asked to bring their student ID — and to eat a good meal before donating. As this event was originally planned as a back-to-school kickoff, all who donate blood will receive a free express admission ticket to the Mortuary Haunted Mansion downtown, along with a free lunch voucher to be used on campus. Walk-ins are welcome.
