A screening and discussion with director and subject of the film “Same God,” an incredibly powerful, arresting, and awe-inspiring documentary about Dr. Larycia Hawkins, the first African American woman tenured at her small evangelical institution (Wheaton College). Dr. Hawkins wore a hijab in embodied solidarity with Muslims. After she posted a picture of herself in the hijab on Facebook with a message of solidarity asserting that we serve “the same God,” a firestorm erupted. What this film speaks to are the intersections of race, gender, religion, religious freedom, and difference, among other topics. During a time of (heightened) Islamophobia, xenophia, and other biases and attacks against Islamic and other communities on the basis of race, religion, gender, and “difference,” this event will be evocative for all who attend.
