On Thursday, Oct. 23, legendary jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones will team up with Loyola students to perform in the Jazz Underground series, a string of six live jazz concerts hosted by the Montage Fine and Performing Arts series. The second concert in the series, “Keeper of the Flame,” is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Old U.S. Mint located at 400 Esplanade Ave. in New Orleans. Additional live jazz concerts are scheduled for Nov. 20, Jan. 22, Feb. 5 and March 5 feature everything from the music of Jeff Gardner to the Astral Project.
All Jazz Underground concerts are held at either Satchmo’s or the Old U.S. Mint and are $10 for general admission, $5 for faculty and staff and free for Loyola students. Tickets are available online.
Jones will lead a supporting ensemble made up of students from Loyolaʼs jazz program in a concert of classic jazz standards and iconic original compositions. A typical set list for Jones includes traditional numbers like “Bourbon Street Parade,” “Sleepy Time Down South,” “Basin Street Blues,” “Do You Know What it Means (to Miss New Orleans),” “Dinah” and “When My Dreamboat Comes Home,” along with his own compositions like “Soft Shoe.”
Jones is a New Orleans native whose playing has been described as a blend of Louis Armstrong and bebop virtuoso Clifford Brown. Jones has been a critical figure in the history of New Orleans music, and is known to critics as one of the top musicians ever produced by the Crescent City.
Jones is a regular at Preservation Hall in New Orleans and a featured performer in the Harry Connick Orchestra, where his playing and singing have made him a crowd favorite. Jones has performed on every continent and in every major U.S. city at prestigious theaters, festivals and jazz clubs like the Village Vanguard in New York City.
