Leonard Bernstein’s Candide opened on Broadway as a musical in 1956. Already a darling of the American musical scene, Bernstein collaborated with some of the most brilliant literary figures of the time, including John La Touche, Richard Wilbur, Dorothy Parker, and Lillian Hellman. Based on Voltaire’s 1759 satiric novel of the same name, the fast-paced comic operetta follows the adventures of the exiled, yet relentlessly optimistic Candide, throughout the Old World and the New. Blindly following the advice of his tutor Pangloss, he careens through a series of wild adventures and astonishing coincidences to return home to his beloved Cunegonde, enlightened by a new, more realistic philosophy of life. Bill Fabris (The Pirates of Penzance, 2010; The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, 2012) returns as stage director/choreographer, and Carol Rausch once again assumes the role of music director/conductor.
